District VII – Minutes

February 4, 2005 – Jr./Sr. All District – Holiday Inn Conference and Convention Center

 

 

Ric Munsey called the meeting to order at 5:05 on Friday evening, February 4, 2005 at the Holiday Inn Conference and Convention Center.

 

A motion was made to dispense of the reading of the minutes and accept them as printed.  The motion was seconded and passed.

 

Old Business:

  1. Marching Festival – Patrick Butler

It was reported from Patrick Butler that the biggest expense of marching festival was the payment of custodial staff.  Patrick also added that he hoped to see several of the directors back at the festival due to discouragement of last years judging.

    1. Ric Munsey commented that at the VBODA meeting at conference the directors decided to change the score sheets back to 5 boxes. 
    2. There was also a change from numbers back to letters as it is for concert festival.
    3. Guard evaluator will be added to the judges panel and be comments only.

 

 

  1. District Auditions – Mark Collins
    1. It was reported from Mark Collins that a great job was done by all. 
    2. Thanks to directors for being understanding in allowing the larger rooms to get starter first. 
    3. Mark also reported that there seem to be about the same number of students as was last year.  The numbers were down in the color instruments such as oboe, bassoon, etc.
    4. Jr. and Sr. Percussion did a great job in their rooms in keeping all things straight. 
    5. Jr. Percussion room the number doubled from last year to this year in the number of students in which auditioned.

 Financial Report of District Auditions:

a.       Audition fee money collected this year was doubled.

b.      Custodian pay was the biggest expense of the day.

Mark recommended that instead of one room to split the rooms to have a Jr and Sr. snare room and then a Jr. and Sr. timpani/mallet room.

Special thank you to Gary Holley for all in which he does for doing the website and computer program for district auditions.

 

  1. Junior/Senior High Band – Ben Parks

Ric Munsey gave a special thank you to Ben Parks, Beverly Campbell and Bob Ballengee for all of their hard work.

Ben reported that all things seem to be going smoothly.  He also stated that medals and certificates would be available at 1:00 tomorrow.

 

  1. Concert Festival – Danny Swartz

a.  Most forms and schedule will be available online at www.vboda7.org

b.  The date for concert festival will be March 11-12 at Southwest Virginia Community College.

c.  The same as last year there will be one flat fee for each band.

 

 

Ric Munsey stated that there are financial statements to look at if you so desire.

 

  1. All-VA Band – Auditions at James Madison University-February 26

a.       Prepared piece is online.  Make sure that your students have this piece of music. 

b.      If you plan on judging,  make sure that you review the etude.

c.       Registration will be held in a new area this year. 

d.      Commitment Form – Make sure your students sign and parent signature as well. 

 

  1. All Virginia Band will be held on April 7-9, 2005 at Oakton and Madison HS in  

Vienna.

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

      

  1. Solo and Ensemble
    1. Area I – St. Paul – Jamie Davidson – Late April
    2. Area II – Holston – Uley Daniels – May 3
    3. Area III - ?

 

  1. State Marching Festival – Pulaski – October 22, 2005
  2. District Auditions – John Battle – December 10, 2005
  3. All Virginia Auditions – JMU(?) – February 25, 2006
  4. Concert Festival – Richlands – March 24-25, 2006
  5. All Virginia Band – Site (?) – April 6-8, 2006
  6. All District Band - ?
  7. District Manual and Directory – A handbook which was a draft was passed out and each member was asked to check it.  A directory was passed out as well.
  8. Ric gave a reminder about Manual Fees.  Selections for concert festival must be chosen from the cd or the manual.

 

  1. Election of Instrumental Chair and Secretary.

Nominations opened for Instrument Chair from the floor.  Nominees were Danny Swartz and Uley Daniels.  Danny Swartz and Uley Daniels accepted the nomination.  Danny Swartz was unanimously elected as District VII Instrument Rep. 

 

Nominations for secretary were opened up.  Nominees were Cindy Roberts.  Cindy Roberts was elected as District VII Secretary. 

 

Motions:

Adjust percussion rooms from 2 rooms to 4 rooms for District Auditions in 2005.  There will be separate rooms for Jr. and Sr. Snare Rooms and then there will be separate rooms for Jr. and Sr. Timpani and Mallet room.  Motion Passed

 

9th Grade students that audition for Jr. and Sr. Level pay one audition fee beginning in 2005.  Motion Passed

 

Motion:  Set schools to host 2006 All District – Jr. Weekend will be held on last weekend of January and Sr. Weekend will be held on first weekend of February and do a mail in vote by state audition date to decide whether or not we wish to hold the district event together at the Holiday Inn Convention Center in Bristol, VA on the last weekend of January 2006.  Motion Passed

 

Jr. High All District – January 27-28 - Grayson County in 2006 if the Holiday Inn does not work out.

 

Sr. High All District – February 3 -4 – Powell Valley if the prior does not work out.
